Riot police prevent children from attending Christmas carol event

70 children have been prevented by riot police from entering a Christmas party held in one of the villages of the municipality of Pungeşti.  The children are not allowed to go singing Christmas carols, as this means forming groups bigger than three, which is prohibited.

Italian MEP Andrea Zanoni reacts to events in Pungeşti

L’eurodeputato Andrea Zanoni presenta un’interrogazione alla Commissione europea per denunciare la repressione violenta da parte delle forze dell’ordine delle manifestazioni contrarie alle operazioni di esplorazione per l’estrazione di gas di scisto (shale gas) effettuate dalla Chevron, secondo quanto riportato da alcune ONG. “Il diritto di manifestare pacificamente il proprio pensiero è sacrosanto tanto più quando lo si fa per difendere l’ambiente e la propria salute. La Commissione europea faccia luce su questo grave episodio che minaccia la democrazia di tutti i cittadini dell’Unione europea”

L’Ue intervenga per condannare la repressione violenta da parte delle forze dell’ordine delle manifestazioni contrarie alle operazioni di esplorazione finalizzate all’estrazione di gas di scisto (shale gas) presso il villaggio di Pungești, nel nord-est della Romania. Manifestare pacificamente il proprio pensiero è un diritto sacrosanto in tutta l’Unione europea, la sospensione dei diritti civili per consentire le operazioni della multinazionale Chevron, denunciata da alcune ONG rumene, è assolutamente intollerabile”. Lo chiede con un’interrogazione alla Commissione europea l’eurodeputato Andrea Zanoni, membro della commissione ENVI Ambiente, Sanità Pubblica e Sicurezza Alimentare al Parlamento europeo.

In occasione di un sopralluogo a Bucarest per la gestione del randagismo lo scorso 3 dicembre, alcune ONG mi hanno consegnato una petizione che condanna la forte repressione subita dai manifestanti contro le operazioni di esplorazione del sottosuolo al fine di estrarre il gas di scisto della Chevron e operata dalle forze dell’ordine rumene – denuncia Zanoni – Secondo i manifestanti, il 2 dicembre scorso Chevron ha ripreso le proprie attività esplorative dopo lo stop dell’ottobre precedente in seguito alle numerose manifestazioni contrarie, e la Gendarmeria, forza di polizia paramilitare, avrebbe malmenato e allontanato i manifestanti, bloccando l’accesso all’area anche alla stampa”.

“Se tutto ciò venisse confermato, ci troveremmo di fronte ad un ingiustificabile abuso di potere da parte delle forze dell’ordine rumene e ad una gravissima violazione del diritto di manifestazione pacifica del proprio pensiero. Per questo chiedo alla Commissione europea di verificare con le autorità rumene lo svolgimento dei fatti e, nel caso, di intervenire severamente per impedire il ripetersi di simili gravi episodi nemici della democrazia e potenzialmente pericolosi per tutti i cittadini europei”,  conclude l’eurodeputato.

Diverse ONG stanno denunciando da tempo le azioni violente compiute dalle forze dell’ordine che hanno trasformato Pungești in una zona di guerra. Secondo le ONG, il modo violento in cui sono state represse le manifestazioni non ha precedenti nella storia della Romania e costituisce un irresponsabile e pericoloso attacco ai diritti umani e civili. La popolazione di Pungești rivendica il diritto a manifestare e ad opporsi a un metodo di estrazione, il fracking, altamente controverso a causa del rischio di inquinamento della falda acquifera correlato.

37 protestors from Pungeşti risk two to seven years of imprisionment

Vaslui District Attorney Office opened an investigation against 37 protesters from Pungeşti

Vaslui District Attorney’s Office opened an investigation against 37 protesters who participated in the December 7 demonstrations in Pungeşti area. These people been accused of destroying the fence surrounding Chevron platform and for assaulting the riot police.

A total of 37 people are prosecuted by the Vaslui District Attorney’s Office after the December 7 protests from Siliştea area – Pungeşti, where about 400 people gathered in front of the land owned by Chevron protesting against the shale gas exploration, according to a MEDIAFAX correspondent.

Prosecutors from Vaslui District will investigate 28 protesters for destruction and outrage against morality, and the rest of 9 protesters will be investigated for outrage against morality

“On December 7, the defendants destroyed the surrounding fence of Chevron platform in the area of Pungeşti village. Also, the people on whom criminal prosecution started provoked incidents and assaulted the gendarmes, jeopardizing their safety and the company’s workers that is operating within the platform” – declared Tuesday, to the MEDIAFAX correspondent, Mihaela Mantu , the spokesman for the Prosecutor’s Office Vaslui District Court.

LEGALITY

Dozens of people, especially from Pungesti village, participants in the December 7 events, when following the incitement, when the surrounding fence of the Chevron Company from Silistea perimeter fell to the ground, have been summoned on Tuesday, December 17, at Vaslui District Police Department, as defendants in a criminal case no. 5199/P/2013.  A total of  37 people so far, and others that will be identified later from the recordings made by the gendarmes were charged with the offense of outrage against morality, and 28 of them have additional destruction charges.

“In case no. 5199/P/2013 charges were filled for 28 defendants for offenses of outrage against morality and destruction, according to Penal/Criminal Code, 321 art., 2nd paragraph and 217 art., 1st paragraph, and for 9 defendants for the offense of outrage against morality, according to Penal/Criminal Code, 321 art., 2nd paragraph, offenses consisting in the fact that on 12.07.2013 the defendants destroyed the surrounding fence of  Chevron platform, in the area of Pungeşti village, Vaslui District, provoked incidents and assaulted the riot police, endangered their safety and the companies’ workers that were operating within the platform”, stated Mihaela Mantu, spokesperson for the Prosecutor’s Office Vaslui District Court. According to the Penal/Criminal Code for the offense of outrage against morality, the accused protesters can be punished by imprisonment between two and seven years, while for destruction, the punishment is less, between one month and three years, or a fine.

The prosecutors’ investigation is conducted in co-operation with Vaslui District Police Department, that have already sent subpoenas in order to take statements from the people accused of destruction and outrage against morality.

About 400 people protested on December 7, along the road from Vaslui to Garceni against Chevron intention to set in the first shale gas exploration in Vaslui District.

Protesters managed to tear down almost entirely the surrounding fences on the 20,000 square meters land owned by Chevron, without the possibility of the security forces to intervene and stop their actions.

Later, in the area arrived more gendarmes, and protesters were bodily searched and evacuated. Dozens of people were arrested by gendarmes and taken to the Vaslui District Police Department headquarters, where either charges were filed against them or were fined.
